Problem : On Google Meet, the teacher records the session (typically a live lesson or stream) but at the end, said teacher can only "view" the recording. The file belongs to another member of staff that was present.
Cause : This is due to Google Meet internal ways of working. On these Meet, the first person that gets to the "Join now" screen (even without actually joining the Meet) automatically becomes the "host" and has ownership of the Meet. Thus, if a recording is done during the meet, they will own the recording (independantly of the person that actually recorded the session).
This stays valid even if said person leaves the Meet early.
This only applies to people that have permissions to create a Meet - so, typically, members of Staff but not Students.
Exception : Google Meet sessions that are planned through a Calendar invitation always belong to the organiser, whoever gets in there first. So recordings will also always belong to the organiser as well.
Solution : As it is not an issue per se but Google Meet's intended way of working, the solution is to make sure to be the first one to get to the "Join now" page (even if you don't actually get in imediately).
Addendum : If your recording has already gone to the wrong person, you can ask them to give you ownership of the file (see this article about how to change ownership of a file).
